Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
Hey , looking for some assistance and for starters here is my build and only 300km and all parts are new ,bike pulls hard and strong starts good no popping from carb and no decel pops
2000 FLHTC
95inch Wiseco BB 9.1 flat top
Andrews Coil over valve springs
Redshift 527 cams .525 lift
SE plate , tensioners , oil pump
S&S HP Lifters and adj pushrods
S&S ineer cam bearings
Carb CV40
S&S power tuned headers / SE Fatshotz slip ons
Dynatech TC88 module
My bike been in the shop twice for loud valve train noise since the build, louder than any i have heard, the second time my Indy who has been around Harleys for over 30 years did the following chasing down this valve train clatter and loud Tick when hot.
Measured every component to do with top end, he called it blueprinting, measured piston clearance, ring gap , measured the rocker shafts and rockers to ensure they were within factory specs, checked valve spring height and adjusted as per Andrews, also redid the valves seat and valves, removed primary and checked compensator, rechecked cam bearings, replaced new oil pump with another SE pump, checked lifter bleed down and checked cam plate, everyting checks out and yet cold start valve train clatter and hot gets worse with loud Tick. If i put my ear towards the heads sure sounds like it comes from the heads, My indy is at a full loss on where to look, told me to ride it until full break in is done but is so annoying and i play radio loud to drown it out , and all this checking was done on his time,
It could simply be your engine combination. Heavier than stock springs with a bigger cam is going to be noisier, among all the other possibilities. Consider this, though: even though your Indy found the rocker shafts to be in spec, they still could be the source of your noise, especially if, as you say, the noise seems to be in the top end.
i have the Rockouts on hand and will install at some point, even my ndy is surprised at how loud the valve train is, and when hot there is a loud tick that can be heard with rado playing at full volume doing 50mph
Would something in the bottom end cause this, there is no banging or clunking and valve train noise is in sync with rpm, under load or no load its the same.

Is the noise happening at certain rpms or all of the time?If all of the time it meant be a lifter.
Valve train chatter all the time, loud ticking from what appears to be from 1 valve or something when motor gets hot, ticking only starts when hot, top end chatter all the time, kinda like the usual valve train noise but amplified
People literally across the country and around the world are finding out just how much Rockouts can quiet down a noisy top end. Don't underestimate them

Are you running stock valve springs?Put another 1/2 turn in that valves push rod if you have adjustables
Could be a bad lifter. Replace lifters with the newer S&S premiums. Make sure they are bled down and adjusted correctly. Super important.
Also, as motor gets hot, oil viscosity breaks down and parts start to make noise, especially the valve train.
I have run Red Shift cams and they have a nice profile that isn't known to be noisy, especially since you don't have big lift anyway.
Changing oil to Liquimoly really helped keep my valve train quiet after motor gets hot. Also, keeps temps down.
What break in oil are you running?
Have you pulled the rocker boxes and checked to make sure springs and rockers aren't touching or rubbing?
Have you checked pushrod tubes to make sure there is no contact with the pushrods?
Look for witness marks- http://harleytechtalk.org/htt/index....c,75005.0.html
We load conventional S&S lifters here to .140".
4.5 turns on a 32 TPI pushrod.
Very quiet.
If you used a double-wound spring, the collar(s) may be touching the rocker covers, and a distinct mark will be evident.
