When changing the oil.
On the level?
Or on the kick stand?

Your owners manual tells you that. If you're servicing your bike, then get the factory service manual, as suggested above. If you don't have an owners manual you may be able to download one from the H-D website, go to the Owners tab.

On the kick stand. Cold level on the dipstick is measured right between Harley and Davidson at the hyphen. Hot is marked on the other side of the stick.
