Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
Roadstar, just an observation. Agree with all the good detailed advice of djl's and others. I rebuilt my trans last year for a an issue that was eventually discovered to be bad/worn-down splines on the belt pulley. In the process I replaced most of things talked about- races, bearings, main shaft seal, etc.
I see the pics above with the underside of the inner primary and chromed cover, and glaring at me is that gouge/bite out of the black inner primary housing. While you may indeed have inner seals/bearings that need replacing, keep an eye on that as well. It almost looks like that gouge is opening up a space between cover and inner that the primary gasket can't seal.

Was it hard to change the race? How did you do it?
Not hard, just time consuming and some purpose built tools are required; service manual should be handy for reference. Remove outer and inner primary; remove primary drive to expose main shaft and trans pulley. Remove trans pulley to expose IPB race; you will need to buy or fabricate the deep socket and donut to fit the trans pulley nut and you will need to buy or fabricate the tool to hold the pulley or remove the trans top cover and engage two gears in the tranny to hold the pulley. Remove IPB race; you will need the IPB race R/R tool, or you can dremel a notch in the race, strike it with a chisel and it will break but you will still need to buy, or fabricate the install tool. Main shaft/5th gear seal should be replaced and it is a PITA to remove. If an early model, quad seal and space should be replaced, those parts are not used in the later models. Replace the IPB and seal in the inner primary housing. I would also replace the MDG seal while at it. I usually replace the shift shaft and jackshaft seal as well. Parts are cheap, might as well replace everything you can while inside.

Brian Kelley, yes, I believe that may have something to do with it. Long time ago, I remember hitting a speed bump in a gas station, and it felt like it hit the frame hard. Maybe it hit the case and did some damage. The fluid on the floor is always clear/clean, like the fresh primary fluid I put in. Probably need to buy an inner primary case. Wonder how much that will cost.

If the leak is originating between the chain case cover and the inner primary, that leak will be easy to identify. Just clean up all evidence of a leak and let the bike sit, if the leak is coming from between the chain case cover and the inner primary, it will show up quick. I doubt that is the source of the leak.
If you are shopping for an inner primary, you can check ebay.
When I was rebuilding the trans on my 05 FLSTN last year, I bungled and snapped the land out of the tranny trap door, while pressing a bearing in.
I bought a mint used piece from a salvage place in Florida off ebay.
I might be able to look up the name of the business.
