Wow didn't know it had a gasket instead of the o-ring. Do all the torque specs and sequences match up to what the book calls for in the 103?

If I were in your boots, I would just drop a S&S Cycle 124" engine in it and call it a day.

You can always sell the 120R motor (as is or fix the noise issue first) or keep it as a spare that will never be needed.

So $6200+ instead of $2300 with head work? That would be a tough sell. The 120 wouldn't have been the route I would have taken in the first place but he's already spent the money, gotta make the most of it.

The 103 specs is what I used, no issue yet. Here is the gasket part number for OEM base gasket and a link to the Harley instruction sheet.

16736-04 Base gasket, cylinder (2)

It kinda is, but normally if a part breaks I use aftermarket parts to fix. The base gaskets I did order OEM from boardtracker HD. I like to keep this link to that sheet because I've had "no it all's" tell me Harley's newer engines don't have base gaskets, so I post this link and pictures of my old gaskets to prove my case.

I blame my base gaskets leaking from riding in too many slow moving parades, the engine gets too hot going that slow for too long.

From the evo days we learned that blowing base gaskets usually resulted from inadequate warm-up and then a spirited departure. The o-ring on the t/c spoiled us, lol

Hey guys I have a couple questions about a bike I'm working on. Bike is a 14 streetglide special. He had a 120R put it in before he took delivery of the bike. Bike has around 15000 on it now. After doing about a 1000 mile round trip weekend he pulled into a town and engine started rattling. Bad enough he shut the engine down and called us for a trailer. We get the bike back to my place and it fires right up but there's a rattle coming from the front left of the engine/primary, then it just dies. My first thought is compensator. We put it on the lift and tear into the primary. There is a little wear on the ramps of the compensator otherwise it looks good (I've only seen one obviously bad one so not a lot to go off of). Will these springs wear out without much wear on the ramps? Is there any other known problem areas with these 120's? One more question. This also developed a base gasket leak in the last couple thousand miles. It started as a seep then changed to a full on leak. It's coming from the base of the rear cylinder right at the case seam. Any ideas what would cause this? Could the case have shifted causing this leak? We will most likely be tearing it down and doing a 124 but I want to make sure it doesn't leak when going back together. Sorry for the long post just wanna make sure all the information is here. Thanks for any help you guys can give me.
we have one in our shop right now that we have sent the cams out to have the grinds checked, after hours upon hours of eliminating other possible issues... Just a thought. If I remember, I'll let ya know what the results are when I hear... Sounds like the same issue we had... Replaced the lifters with s&s and it still happened.

Yeah it would be interesting to hear how that went. As of right now it's looking like we're doing the fuel Moto 124 and having them do head work as well. Also looking into sending the bottom end to Darkhorse to get that done up. Waiting to hear exactly what he's willing to spend on this. I'll update here when we have a plan set in place

Like the old saying goes "A house is only as good as the foundation it sits upon."
