Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
Finally had time to tear it down last night. Was a bad lifter that damaged the cam also. He's having work issues now so this is going to get all new gaskets and just do new rings with a quick hone. Got woods lifters on the way now gotta figure which cams to run
if i was you, given that i took my 120R apart at 122 miles, i would also replace valve springs when you do lifters and cams. the valve springs on the 129R are overkill and cause most of the lifter problems.
i replaced cams, lifters and valve springs at 122 miles. 10k later, no worries. engine is stout, no noises and runs strong
in addition, i am still running factory Comp that came in 12 CVO with no problems.
i use ATF in the primary as per Barrnetts instructions.
the 120R has some know issues, lifter are one, as well as the 266E cams. Bobby Woods talked me into changing springs when i went with his cams. i am really glad i listened.

Yep I got woods lifters and woods 9B cams on the way. Doing adjustable pushrods and new valve springs as well. Now it's looking like im gonna need a new cam plate and oil pump. Got some nice grooves
Sounds like it's all coming together. Check the cylinder studs. Have seen a few that loosen up and cause the leak at the cylinder base. Not saying that's your case but just something to check......
Resurrecting an old thread cause I have a base gasket problem with a 120R for one of my customers. Called the HD dealer that I normally deal with and asked them to look up parts for me and they couldn't find anything. Sigh.
The link above for the service sheet doesn't work any more. Anyone have a downloaded copy that they could PM or email me? Would be much appreciated. I am going to call the dealer later today with the base gasket part number given above and see if it is still available (fingers crossed) but will be doing all the things suggested above as I dive into this. He hasn't had any problems with it, thankfully, so all we've had to do is services and such. He's the only customer I have with a 120R (also thankfully at this point) so I don't have much time on them.
Assuming I can use aftermarket head gaskets if I just find one for a 4.060 bore, I'll probably recommend to him that we inspect cam and lifters (50k miles but not sure how much on 120R as he bought the bike with 7k) but so far it has been a strong runner for him.
