Ok...I know this question has been tossed around a bit, but I am hoping to get the latest skinny.......... got an 09 Ultra, 27,000 miles, stock. Recently, I have noticed a "clattering" or "marbles in can" sound from the upper engine. Seems to be most noticeable 2500 rpm range. Thought's?
I have just heard about a product called " Rock-out" and I believe there is another on the market too..........I know this is a difficult question to answer, but are these the answer to my annoying noise problem.....?
When it makes the noise, grab a 3/8" extension, longer the better, and gently touch one end to the motor and the other by your ear. This will help you pin point the location of the noise. If it is the top of your rocker cover, more than likely it is the rockers clicking. DK Custom Products has a thread here on the forum in regards to this and is very informative. They sell a product, Rocker Lockers, about $20.00 to elimante this noise. Check it out.

Sounds like detonation to me. You could solve the problem by downshifting....... You may be lugging the motor......
Could also be bad fuel or carbon build up on top of pistons; if the noise is detonation. Hard to diagnose without being able to hear the noise but "marble in a can" is a classic description of detonation.

Totally agree. Have you changes fuels, stations you stop at?
An example, I always stopped at Circle K on the way to work, a new Fry's (grocery store station like Sams Club) brand sprang up on the corner. I started filling up there. About 6 months later I was complaining of pinging, the pipes were off color just was running crappy. I took it in and had the dealer check sensors, not it. When I was talking to the service tech and describing when I started having the issue it dawned on me it was around the time I changes stations. Went back to my older station and a few tanks later problem solved. No idea why, it was 91 octane at both stations but it made the difference.
I chased a somewhat similar issue like this for a few weeks. I thought it was pinging also. Took off the rockers to check clearances, readjusted push rods, checked lifters, pulled primary cover to check comp and chain tensioner, etc, etc, etc.... Then I found this post below. Some of the well nuts in my nacelle were tore up, so I was getting metal to metal rubbing from the nacelle and the light housing. Replaced all of them for $6 from my local hw store...sigh.
