Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
I bel;ieve the onbly time they get power to open is when u push the start button wire 19 going to emc plug pretty sure u wont hear them compression check will tell u for sure
yes on from factory, did u always own bike or did someone have a screaming eagle tunner before and could have turned them off , surprised u cant turn them on or off using the power vision.
Bought bike in 2011. Was completely stock. I dont have a PowerVision. I have a PCV. Power Commander Five. If they come on from factory then its safe to say their on. When it gets hot the engine will turn over a few times then souds like starter lets go. Maybe weak battery?
Don't throw the baby out with the bath water. I know you think the cams are in time and they probably are. No need to tear into the cam chest, check compression first to verify; the readings should be close. If off by 20-30psi, you know the cams are not in time.
Verify that the ACRs are working. Load test the battery; I am thinking that is part of your problem. Better yet, if the batters dates back to 2011, it's time to replace it anyway.
If all that checks out, forget about maps and get the bike on a dyno for a proper tune. You can load maps forever and will never hit the nail on the head with the 255 cams. I think once tuned, you will like the 255s unless you find yourself wanting more after 4500rpms....
In the 5000 miles ive put on the bike(i know i know) i have never hit 4500. Even when im riding it hard i come close to 4500 but never over. Thats why i chose these cams. (And the price) Im a bigger guy and always ride two up. Im having it dynod end of week and gna get a new battery. Any suggestions? And i hope that hot start issue goes away.
Can you explain how to do the compression check? Just hook up gauge. Turn bike over. Record pressure?
You'd be better off getting a flash tuner and having someone tune it for you. You might get away with ACRs wired up to help reduce cranking compression to help with starting but you'll likely have timing issues that cannot be corrected by power commander. Could have a bunch of timing in one place and not enough in another.. Have you talked to the guys at FM to tell them what you did? Jamie should have some good suggestions.

Yes, pull plugs, hook up gauge, hold throttle wide open, spin the motor until the gauge stops moving; should take about 5-6 cycles. Battery must be fully charged; a weak battery may not let the motor spin that last little bit to get an accurate reading. The HD AGM battery is hard to beat for service life but like anything else unique to HD, it comes with a price premium. Some like the Big Crank ETX-30L but it only has 400CCA. The last battery I bought was a YUASA GYZ32HL, 500CCA. Get a tender and keep the battery on the tender while parked; battery will always be fully charged and will last longer.
bwoltz is right, you really need a flash tuner to get a proper tune; the 255 can be a tuning challenge. Jamie might be able to help improve your situation with another map but you won't get optimum performance without a dyno tune.......
