Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
The older ones (maybe what you are looking at..my last attachment) were keyed and had a nuts holding them together. They are pretty much throw away parts now since they are fixtured which holds the alignment and pressed together. Darkhorse will rebuild a bullet proof one however . http://www.darkhorsecrankworks.com/

I love the BFH approach to truing and balancing a crank. If you can truly do that with a hammer, what happens to that crank on a nasty kick back on a heat soaked restart, or an emergency braking situation when full lock is applied before the clutch is disengaged? If truing and balancing the crank for an odd firing, air cooled 45* vtwin was as simple as shown on YouTube, Darkhorse woud be out of business. It is laughable what the uninitiated think they can do in their garage.
I probably should have had my first shot of caffeine before posting.
I invented a tool to repair connecting rod journals (cars) w/o removing engine. About 30 engines are done already. One of them, 02 Jaguar X-type I drove for a few K miles. Yesterday I finished 08 Dodge Caliber (2 journals)
There is no need to invent anything to adjust bike crank. I wouldn't use a hammer to adjust it. Use vise to hold one half of a crank and some holding tool like channel locks with a pipe for leverage for another.

OK so you are going to use a BVF but not a BFH; good start. Please document the procedure, post an instructive video and the end result.
Who repaired a Harley crank? Opinions of people who never did it and have no idea how to do it are very valuable...
Oh, I know how to do it; just don't have the proper tools and equipment to do it. I will continue to rely on Hoban Brothers (AKA Darkhorse) for my crank work. Please document the adventure with photos, etc.; I have an open mind.

I always appreciate a DIY type who's not afraid to tackle anything. That said, I have no idea how anybody could true and balance a crankshaft within .001" at home. If you do go forward with it, I wish you luck, and please post photos.
