Default My build

I also posted this on another site.

About 8 months ago I started to purchase parts for my 2009 RG 96in to 106in build. I am a teacher and coach 3 HS sports so money is not falling out of my wallet. I detail cars also, so every extra dime I had I would save it for this build. It didn't go as I had planned but the end result was what I wanted. For those that don't want to read the story, Ill post a parts list at the bottom with pictures.

Had a friend who did previous work for me. He did my monotubes up front, my handlebars, pulled/intalled my inner fairing. He is very knowledgable mechanic with a lot of experience working on custom and stock bikes. He has done many 106 builds with no problem. I had zero experience with harley motors, only SB chevys. So, obvious choice was to have him do it. Turned out the wrong choice.

Friend cam over and pulled the motor apart when I was out work. I was greeted to 2 6ft long tables full of motor parts. All of the chrome was going to be PC black. He installed the SE clutch spring and changed cam bearings. Friend said let me know when you get the parts back and Ill be over to put it all back together. He also took my cam plate and pump to install the Axtell relief spring.Well, parts came back, and the "Friend" was contacted but never returned calls or texts for 3 weeks! As of writing this I have still not heard from him. Had to buy a S&S cam plate and oil pump, that money was not planned on! DAM!

Along with a downloaded manual, and youtube videos, I started putting this pile of parts together. Remember, I didn't take it apart, and never worked on a harley motor before. It was a little overwhelming at times. Biggest PIA was the oil rings. If I was to do it again, I would purchase a ring compressor. Spend the money but save the time.

Everything actually went together pretty smooth, besides those oil rings. Every thing was torqued down to specs and double checked. I had a PC5 from my stage 1 and I downloaded a map "Close" so I could start it and check for leaks. Bike fired up after about 3 seconds and no leaks anywhere!

I made arraignments with Heath @ H&D Cycles to get the bike tuned and got the bike over there on schedule. If you are in need of a tuner Heath is the man! Heath spent time with me on the phone discussing the process of break in on the dyno, and tuning in general. Super great guy and Heath does incredible work. The bike runs starts right up, runs so smooth, pulls hard and keeps pulling. Ive read on many forums this quote, "get it tuned by a quality tuner". This is so true.

As of today I have about 75 miles since getting the bike back, work has gotten in the way with putting more miles on it. It has run flawlessly. Im thrilled with the outcome!

Parts list:
S&S 106 kit. Cometic gasket kit, .030 HG, Purchased from H&D Cycles. S&S quickie pushrods, lifters, cam plate, oil pump and AC. CycleRama 575 and bearings. SE clutch spring. FuelMoto headpipe with full size crossover. V&H mufflers. Stock heads with manual CR.

The mufflers will be changed out as soon as funds are available. Pictures attached

Congrats eaglefan! Good lookin scoot.
Mechanical skills cross over from the muscle car days...must have been a daunting task since you didn't take it apart, but now you know how it goes back together.

Thanks man. It was a daunting task to say the least not knowing how it came apart.
I said a lot of things that were not PG rated before I started, the jersey came out of me. I could have boxed it all up and taken it somewhere but I would have lost a lot of man points, I had to at least try.
After I got going it was a lot of fun learning how to put it back together. I bought some new tools too which is always good!
