Default Cam change, etc. Opinions sought.

I am getting ready to purchase some parts for my '09 FXDF. I have an in-law who has worked at the local Honda shop for about 20 years, and he told me he could order new parts for my bike for @ 30-40% off MSRP. He is a straight shooter, and he is the sales manager at his dealership.

Anyway, I already purchased, installed an SE heavy breather a/c, V&H Big radius pipes, and paid for the download before I picked up my bike about 5K miles ago. I love the bike, but want more power, especially on the highway (I ride from CT to Maine a lot...).

The changes I am proposing (I am not a mechanic, so bear with me) are as follows:
  • Feuling Combo Kit - #7074 - Cam Support/Oil Pump/hydraulic roller lifters/gasket kit.
  • Feuling Reaper Cams - #1005-(525) -525 intake/535 exhaust
  • Feuling - #4065 - HP+ Adjustable Pushrods
  • Feuling - #1205 - Beehive Valve Springs
  • Dynojet - Power Commander V
  • Dynojet - Auto Tune for Power Commander V
The main reason I am thinking of going with all Feuling parts is that I felt it would be easier to make sure they are all compatible before placing the order. I am also of the belief they have a good reputation. (T/F?..IYO) I was thinking billet cam support and super oil pump, etc was a good investment for now since I am planning on building out the top end of the motor next year to 107". Are the valve springs a waste of money at this point?

Oh yeah, should I get the crank welded and balanced as long as I am in there? What is the benefit of doing this? Does it need to be done if I am going up to 107" next year? Is there anything obvious I am missing? As I said, I am not a mechanic and I am new to this forum... feedback?

It looks like I will be able to purchase these parts for around $1700. How many hours do you think it should take for a skilled mechanic to put this together?

Thank You-

One more thing... I am thinking of switching out the exhaust to an FSD "nasty series" 2-1 satin black ceramic.

IMO feuling is kinda overpriced. I have read a few posts of people getting rid if their feuling oil pumps....not happy with them.

I got the SE cam plate and oil pump. Works good for me. Never heard anything about feuling cams. Save your money on the springs until you have head work done, let your head guy set them up with what he likes or thinks will work best for your combo.

Can't give you any advice on tuners, I am a carb guy.

Check out R&R cycles they have a good cam plate as well. I would also advise talking to a shop or head guy before buying anything. Get a good game plan on your future mods and what will be good to buy now....sucks buying twice!

You have a lot of parts listed that you really don't need. Slow down and do some research. The stock valve springs, cam plate, oil pump and lifters are fine, no need to change them. Call Bean at Big Boyz, he's in your neck of the woods and does it right. Just put his name on the search in this forum and you will see what I'm talkin about.

Are you referring to Big Boyz in Augusta, ME? I haven't figured out how to search in this forum for him...

For your purposes I think the stock Harley stuff will serve you well. You are not building a monster motor. Andrews chain drive cams, adjustable pushrods, new cam bearings, gaskets and o-rings will set you back around $500. When you get in there you can see if you want to replace the chain tensioners, they are $40 a piece. New stock lifters are always a good idea for an additional $100. Reading all the stuff on these forums can drive you crazy as some guys will want to commit suicide because their cranshaft run out is .003

A Woods TW5-6, .030MLS headgasket and a port job. Keep the stock pushrods and lifters. http://bigboyzheadporting.com/
