Hello HD Forum! Looking at some sound advice to see what direction I should go in on my Deuce. I have the original cam chain Tensioners with 30,000 miles on them. Is know there are a couple schools of thought on replacing them. I have a manual but don't think my mechanical abilities are up to tackling these. My current Indy just retired so I talked to 2 other local shops and got qoutes with their recommendations.
My current setup 2004 deuce carbed.
Mikuni 42
SE 203 cam
Adjustable pushrods
SE heavy breather
Thunder header exhaust
Always ran regular HD 20w50 oil
Economic route
Cyco shoes with the upgraded Torrington bearings and a bailsey Spring.
Shop 1
Fueling full conversion kit with pump, cam plate, lifters and an Andrews 26n cam. Plus full swap of all 3 holes and convert to synthetic. Includes breather filters and carb tuneup and jetting
Shop 2
Same set up but he uses All SE parts and would do an S&S cam I think the 509. Plus dyno to get carb set up and dialed in.
Both around $2000
I plan on keeping this bike as it was my get well gift to myself after chemo. I also want the option to upgrade to 95/98 but don't want to check Tensioners every 20,000 miles. I'm also hesitant for cam drive as runout on 2004 my be greater than 3 thousand if it is will it maintain runout 5 years down the road?
My opinion is that those indys are expensive. I think you should be able to get all shop 1 offers + the 98" kit for $2000 or just a bit more. And I do suggest you get it all done at once.
The Fueling plate is not really needed as the stock plate is perfectly adequate. The upgraded oil pump is not needed either but I like it. A 98" kit from Hillside is about $600 or so.
Andrews Cams has a list of stuff needed to make a complete swap to roller chains and hydraulics.
S&S 509 cams with gear drive hardware is available from Amazon for $570. Retain the OEM cam plate and oil pump; install the Baisley pressure relief spring in the OEM cam plate for $12. 95"/98" piston cylinder kit from one of our forum sponsors for about $600; HD tapered quick install pushrods for $135 from an online discount dealer, S&S standard lifters run about $125 IIRC; another $100 for gaskets and oil and that puts you about $1550 plus shipping cost; maybe another$75. Most HD shops will charge about 4 hours for a top end rebuild, so if the shop rate is $100/hour, you are right at $2000. Add another $300 for a dyno tune and your done.
I believe Vee Twin Performance has a 98" package including all the above for chain drive cams starting at about $1400. You are probably capable of doing the work yourself as well, just have to work up the nerve to take it on.
Avoid the Fueling part; they have a shaded history and the pump lets the oil bag drain into the sump; so does the OEM pump but it takes a lot longer. The 509 cam set is a good bolt in cam for a cam only upgrade in a Stage I 88"; the valve springs in the '04 heads are limited to about .525" lift. However, get the heads worked and there are many more cam options available.
Take your time, do the homework, talk to our forum sponsors about at least doing the machine work and providing as many of required parts as possible for you our your local indy to install.
Put cams and cyco shoes in min TC88 and I was worried about doing. But if you have a Service manual and some mechanical abilities you can do it. I used S&S .509 cams standard lifters and S&S adjustable pushrods. The only thing I would do differently is use S&S quickee adjustable pushrods.
If you dont have the tool to get the tension off the chain I have read that a deep well 15/16 socket with a groove cut into it would work.

Update! Spoke with Phil from Torque monsters today. Discussed a couple options including keeping current cams and bumping compression with new heads and pistons. He is a great guy and was a pleasure to speak with regarding options.
He is sending a quote to me tonight and should be around same price as the local Indy shops but will have a few more HP after Phil does his thing!
Hello, my friend! In order to ride a motorcycle like a Harley with a full sense of comfort, you should really take care of really comfortable shoes. This is not only an important element of the wardrobe of a real biker, as part of the image, but also an important part of your safety and comfortable riding. I didn't think much about it before. but now I realized how important this part is. So I ordered CAM boots for myself . Now I have a full sense of security and self-confidence while driving.
