Right now i am having my cam tentioners done I drove my bike to a guys house i consider one of the best wrenches around these parts last night and i froze my *** off. He called me tonight to give me a report on how things look. he said my motor is extremely clean i guess that changing my oil every 1000 miles is doing what i had in mind. I have 20,000 miles on my 257 cams and he said no wear at all. cam tentioners are in good shape but at least half gone. he said thirty thousand is the magic number with them and will differ depending on how you maintain your bike. going with the screamin eagle upgrade kit which includes the heavy duty oil pump and new plate also doing lifters while hes in there. This is the same guy who built my motor and one of the few guys in the world i trust. i have heard a few guys on the forum say that friends of there's have had there tentioners done and the bike runs so much better . he told me that's in there head . i guess if your tentioners are on the last leg it may make a noticeable difference but under normal conditions not so. I believe him.I will probably get it back beginning of next week if not this weekend, That is great i wont have any down time this coming season. i just felt its better to have them done sooner than later as i understand it as these things get worst little pieces of the crap that the tentioners are made of make there way into you crank another reason changing the oil frequently can help. I had my bike all buttoned up for the winter up on jacks with fresh oil had to take it down to get this done. Thing is when this guy is available you do not sit on it you get it there or someone else will.
Did mine last year, the inner one was almost toast at 21,000 miles. Didn't notice the bike run any different but the peace of mind was well worth it. I also replaced lifters while I had it apart and used the SE Hybrid kit as well.
In the middle out doing mine at 30-35k (no speedo for awhile). Tensioners look fine, oil change on occasion, 5-7k (lazy). Went with se hybrid, andrews 37 cam, pushrods, lifters, inner timken bearings. Oh and a big bore. Took a month to decide what kit, or I'd be done by now.
