since i'll be in the cam chest checking the run out. are there some thing i need to watch/not do while in there? the oil pump and such... i have no idea what i'm doing. i have a service manual and will read through repeatedly. i asking about the things that aren't in the service manual that will make me have a baaadddd day.
an run out testing threads out there? all info helps
Always replace the O ring that goes on the spigot from the pump to the case with a new viton O ring.. The smaller ones that go between the cam plate and case can be OK if still soft..

replace all the seals, their cheap and its not worth re-using them.check run out with the cam plate removed (don't laugh, some guys check with the plate on),after reassembly, make sure to align the pump.torque all cam plate bolts, leaving the pump bolts loose, then in 5 or 6 gear, rotate motor about 4-5 revolutions, then torque oil bump bolts
I didnt even thin about the tensioners since i was trying to get rid of the chain. If the run out is beyond .003 i will need to continue to deal with them.
the more i look at the job. The more i think the bike will just need to be down for a week or so. I'd need to pull the push rods, rockers blah blah, might as well do the cylinders and all and not waste the gaskets. So i will tear it down. Test to run out, order parts based on the reading, then let the bike sit until all the good arrive. Fun times.
They don't all do it but it is common. Mine did with a mild 96".
It can happen with a downshift.
It's just a gamble I wouldn't take.
There's nothing wrong with the new style chains.
