Cyco Spring Tensioner Shoes at Just Over 20K Miles
Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
That's great to see some proof they actually work. Just put cyco shoes on my FLH, only have about 3k on them so far. Cycos will be going in the fatboy next tensioner change. They seem like a quality product.
Thanks for the update. Interesting you have them in that color. I have only seen them in the white.
They turn that color from white as they get older, when that happens I dunno. That said, I've never seen an old one crater on the face or get brittle like the OEM. I changed a pair of Cycos for a guy at 15K miles (I didn't know how far they would go). I hit them with a hammer pretty good and they didn't shatter like OEMs do (on the bench, just the shoes).
We've used those by the bag full, for years now.
Must have installed a couple hundred since we started purchasing them.
Yep, they wear very well.

The burrs on the Morse Chain links,(and not all were like that) are the root issue of shoe wear.
As the burrs were "polished" from friction, the chain becomes smooth.
Seen shoes harmed in 1200 miles, had one in with 131,000 that had the original shoes, but were in dire need.

I'm far from an engineer but I think the inner spring tensioner shoes show more wear than the outer is because of the way the shoe sits on the chain and that the chain runs from top to bottom and causes it to dig into the shoe; literally, they contact each other at the end of the fulcrum.
I do agree that some of the Morse chains are rougher than others. I've done a few and you can sometimes feel a difference on the back of the chain.

It's interesting since the outboard one actually has the load of both cams on it. I know when people use Harley's so called SE up grade, they get shafted twice by the mothership since it leaves the link chain on the inside cam with a hydraulic tensioner. If by chance they modify the oilpressure relief, it puts a double whammy on that tensioner. Talk about a mothership screwing that is.
The roller chain only wears till it grooves in and then rolls. However these shoes harden in hot oil. So at a minimum, all shoes even roller chain ones should never be left in longer the 10 years. My original ones are way over due on my 04 at almost 50k
