Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
i just installed an S&S v111 complete motor with a super E carb on my 1993 fxr as well as a new stator, regulator, starter... pretty much everything new except frame, tins, and gauges. my problem is it will crank like theres no tomorrow but is almost impossible to get started. i work at a HD dealership and service keeps telling me everything is fine on the bike and it's user error. i'll admit this is my first carbureted bike, but surely it isn't rocket science to start the thing. i've played with the choke, primed/not primed the throttle, cracked it/not cracked it etc... to find the right starting sequence for my bike with no luck. any help is greatly appreciated
I'd recommend getting a wideband on there to see what the AFR is at idle when you finally do get it started. Cold motors want it RICH to get rolling. Maybe your choke ain't working well.
How many turns out is the air idle screw? This can help in determining if mid range jet size is correct.
How I start S&S carbs. I crank the throttle 3-4 times depending on setting of pump. I then turn the ignition on and hit starter button. As engine turns I slowly open throttle.
A) do you have spark?
b, what is your slow jet size and what kind of pipes do you have on it?
c, are you using the enrichener
so far you have been given good direction,,,,take the a/c of and work the throttle and make sure that gas is shooting from the accel pump,,,,you do have the fuel valve on, correct?
if you have spark and you have fuel coming from the pump, you might want to go back and make sure that you set the base timing up correctly,,,what system did you use, stock wont cut it for that set up.

Checked it in yesterday... the tech threw on a new regulator it was firing up consistently but we all wanted to make sure that the problem was solved with that; bc even after replacing the regulator we weren’t getting consistent readings on a meter at the stator. It would change every so often and we couldn’t figure out why. He opened the primary to inspect the stator and turns out the teeth on my rotor that the stator sits in that also fits onto a gear coming from the 111 were COMPLETELY gone. So effectively my battery was not getting charged which is why it would get harder and harder to start as the day went on. Parts should be here tomorrow and hopefully that fixes everything. Just sick of throwing money at this bike and not being able to ride it for a week straight!! I’ll keep y’all posted
So your telling us that you had a battery/charging problem.? not being charged and not a starting are two different issues. You never told us it cranks slow or any indication in your description that it was a battery issue.... So tell us what brand rotor and stator did you get? And yes heavy hole shots will take out a rotor......
