Default Andrews Conversion Cams Checklist

2002 FLHT, TC88, stage 1 intake and exhaust, 22,000 miles. I'm gathering everything I need to install Andrews Conversion 21N Cams. I just wanted to know if I'm missing anything, like specialty tools, or if I should do anything else while I'm in there.

Here's what I have:
  • 21N cams
  • newer cam support plate
  • newer oil pump
  • newer primary and secondary drive chains
  • newer primary and secondary cam tensioner
  • Rockouts rocker shaft inserts
    • I'm going to take the tank off and reuse my pushrods
    • I figured I might as well do this upgrade while I'm in there
  • James Gasket Cam Change Kit (JGI-25244-99-K)
  • new inner cam bearings
Specialty tools I have:
  • a two sided cam/crank locking tool that should work on tc88s and tc96s
  • inner cam bearing installer/puller
I'm about to order:
  • The two newer cam drive sprockets
I know I'll need some screws and a spacer, which I think I'll get from my local dealer.
The bike has 22,000 miles, but is 16 years old. I haven't planned on changing lifters. Good idea/Bad idea?
Will I need any other specialty tools, maybe for working with the pushrods and lifters?
Anything else I should do while in there? That isn't expensive...

This is a first time project for me, I have a service manual for my bike and should have access to a service manual for a newer twin cam 96 when the time comes. I have a lift table and all the normal mechanics tools.

Thanks for the help.

Replace your lifters, i suggest using the ones from S&S or Jim's. I also use the oil pump alignment screws, which are the same tool as the old evo tappet block alignment screws. A quality 3/8's and 1/4" drive torque wrench should also be included in the list.

I also did the Andrews 21N conversion and inner bearings. You'll love it. I pulled the tank and reused my stock push rods and lifters (19k miles, no scoring or abnormal wear patterns).

Found this blog post while researching the swap... has a pretty comprehensive parts list and a good write up:
http://www.bikernet.com/pages/Andrew...Cam_Plate.aspx

I used this as a guide to order stuff. Some of the part numbers are back level because the write up was done in 2010, but you'll see that when you look'm up to order.

I have a 0.030" stock bore head gasket for sale in the classifieds if you're interested in bumping the compression a touch since you'll be right there.

Sounds like you have everything.

+1 on the oil pump alignment screws.

Also, you might think about changing the breathers to the new style, since you have the rocker boxes open. There pretty cheap and easy to install. I love the 21N cam.

A note on the breathers...

If you change from old to new style breathers you MUST use the shorter screws designed for them. If you buy the kit they are included. Using the old longer screws with the new breathers can crack the head

Thanks for the info. I'll order the alignment screws. The breather is inexpensive, is it a better design than what is in my '02? It is hard to keep track of what HD makes better over the years and what they just make cheaper.

Now I'm in the paralysis by analysis stage of looking at different lifters. I don't need the best, I just need good enough for a 16 year old, 88in bike. This is a budget project.

Wouldn't stress about lifters too much. The 21 cam doesn't have ridiculous ramp rates or super high lift, and you won't be turning whacky high rpms.

A new set of stock lifters is probably good enough, IMO.

A set of s and s standards is about 120 bucks...best piece of mind you can buy for your bike. 100 percent of the time is when you should scrap those junk stock lifters, ask anybody who's had one fail and wipe out their motor.
