Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
Build is 10.5:1 compression FM Level B heads, Xtreme Duty Iron cylinders, Carrillo +3cc pistons, Wood 999-6a cams, FM/Smith Bros. pushrods with SE tubes, S&S standard lifters, S&S TC3 oil pump and cam plate, SE cam chain tensioners, HPI 55mm TB and manifold.
Back story: had Wood lifters in it initially, one stuck open and wouldn't pump back up on initial tune run. Mechanic put Feuling lifters in it. After a while I decided to try S&S lifters to see if that was the noise. Made the same noise with all 3 lifters. I attributed it to "they are Wood cams, it's a built motor, they make noise, etc." Took it to get retuned for the HPI and the tuner/mechanic said he would feel much more comfortable if we opened it up and figured out what the noise is cause he said it's definitely not normal. Spoke with Jamie at Fuel Moto who said these cams have zero issues with noise and are super quiet. So now we open it up in the next day or two and chase the noise down before I can take it back to get retuned.
For what it's worth I have the end of the muffler covered up using the hand-and-rag technique LOL
So far it's not a rocker box issue. Mechanic called this morning and said rocker arms are tight and not a nick or scratch one on the bottom side of the rocker box covers. He's pullin' the pipe and cam cover next.
Sounds like a collapsed lifter when you first start it.
I always thought it was lifter noise but I've had Wood, Feuling, and S&S all in it all set the same and it still makes the same noise. What's the chances ya know. Tearing into it today and hopefully know something. Either way the FM pushrods aren't going back in it and gonna put tapered SE ones in because all 4 are hitting the tubes but my mechanic still doesn't think that's the noise. We'll see...
