Thinking back, could the current condition- screwed valves or rings perhaps-be caused by running lean for a while while I figured out the carb (and intake leaks)?

Don`t over think it...
Ignition, compression, fuel.
Check for all three.
But I would try fresh spark plugs first...

I incorrectly reinstalled the manifold (kicked up an RCH) that caused the grommet to pinch and cause a leak. I also had some fairly white plugs and a cough/sneeze right on takeoff. I have alot of air moving with the big sucker 2 and VH short shots, but I didn't think I should be getting coughs of idle with a 48 pilot. I havent done the compression test yet because its 20-30° here in Pittsburgh this week and Im also waiting on battery cable-to address another problem I discovered. Sometimes I hit the start and bike lights all go off. I smack the seat or wiggle the battery and I comes back on. I hit the start, bike goes dark again.

Your problem is you are starting it without letting it come up to temperature. Do not start your bike in the winter timer unless you are going to ride it long enough to get it up to operating temperature. Bad things happen when you start them in the winter and don't ride.

this is why this forum is so valuable to me. I dont have a buddy to stop me from doing **** like this. A year ago I had knee surgery and my bike got stuck in storage for 8 months and I had hell getting it to run right since then. So I think to myself, this year Im gonna fire it up every now and then. But that requires me keeping it outside in Pittsburgh weather all winter. Only hoping for a day over 40 to try and start. So that lasted all of 2 weeks in only December cold lol. This is alot of BS to deal with for only getting half of the year to ride alot
Why avoid the obvious? Its winter and you have a base gasket leak. Get the top end done before riding season and solve your problems. Shouldn't be ridden much until that leak(s) is fixed anyway.

Thats my plan. Ive done some wrenching but I have no business digging into an engine at my experience level. Found a guy who is an old evo dude thats going to get it sorted.

An EVO needs to be warmed up b4 riding it. All bikes should be, but it's most important for EVOs.

I knew that. But my definition of warming was idling with a halfway choke for about 3 mins and getting to riding. The first few miles around my house is all residential with a bunch of stop signs and lights. I thought that was good enough. Again, rookie ignorance
