Default Crankshaft run-out

Currently smack dab in the middle of researching possible upgrades to my 103HO. Obviously, part of this process involves the decision between using chain-drive or gear-drive cams. My question is this - theoretically, if I decide on chain-drive cams UPFRONT, is it still necessary / suggested to measure my crankshaft run-out? I guess the ONLY reason I am asking this question is to see whether or not I will need to cough up the $120 bucks for the Feuling measuring tool.

Thanks!

You can mount a steel plate on the engine case (flat piece of steel with a hole drilled in it for bolt), use an indicator and magnetic base.

You don`t need a special measuring tool for one time use.

Many other uses for a tool like this.

Indicator and base

Like Dan says; here is one way to skin the cat; they guy has the spec for geared cams wrong but the DIY setup is an example of how you can do it on the cheap. Always good to have baseline data to compare with future measurement. My '05 FXSTD started at .0025" with a 95" build; 25K miles later when I decided to rebuild to 95" to 98" runout was .0045" which is marginal but growing; not good.

Runout is good to know for the longevity of the engine but why switch to gear drive unless making a race motor. Conversion to gear drive is very costly and would possibly involve crank trueing and timken conversion.
