Cam Installation
So I ordered my cams today, Woods 6-6, and I plan on doing the cam swap myself as it is pretty straight forward. I need a specialty tool for this project, a cam bearing remover/installer. I do not have one. I decide to call some Harley shops in the are to get some advice. I call the first one and take a shot in the dark. I ask if I can rent the tool. He says he doesn't rent tools out, which is very understandable. I ask what it will cost to have the cams swapped and he says bout $300. I call the second shop and to my surprise he agrees to rent me the tool for almost what it costs to buy one. He says it will cost me $430 to have the cams swapped. WTF. I call the stealer to see if I can buy the tool from them and they can't find the tool in their system. I ask for service and speak to a guy in the service dept. I ask what it will cost to swap cams and he proceeds to question me on every aspect of what I am doing. He asked what cams I was going with and I said "Woods 6-6" he said "How you gonna get that tunned?" I told him I was getting it dyno tunned. He procceded to tell me in a very rude manner how wrong it was to do what i am doing and how it will never run right. He told me"I want nothing to do with it" and "I won't put my name on work like that." I lost it and gave him a little piece of what I was thinking. After the phone call, I realized I didn't even get the name of the guy. I call back and found out he is the service manager. To his credit he did appologize thoroughly.
I am still left with the problem of a cam job that needs to be done with no tool to do it. Does anyone know where I can get the bearing puller/installer? Does anyone wanna sell or even rent one? A part # would help. Any suggestions? And what do ya think about the bs I was involved in today???

Yeah, dealerships are interesting.
One thing withthe puller they rent, it is a "slap" style puller and there is a chance, remote, but a chance the bearing race could come apart and the needles drop into the case. Pack the bearing with heavy grease just in case as it would catch the needles if this happened. Prior to "tapping" the bearings back in, put them in the freezer overnight, the will almost drop back into place, be sure to set to proper depth and ensure the side of the race with the lettering is facing you when installed. If you really want the right toools to do the job, you can purchase them from HD (they now have these for sale in the SE catalogue) or from George's Garage. http://www.georges-garage.com/ I have many tools from George's and they are top notch in my opinion.

I used the blind hole bearing puller from Harbor freight to get my bearings out, and a socket (of just the right size) turned around on an extension to get the bearings back in.
That cam will wake your bike up beyond anything the dealer can do for you in close to the price range.... (I ran it in my 96" for 20,000) let that service manager take your bike for a spin after you're done, he'll change his tune.
There probably isn't anyone with more experience helping people with that cam than Scott, take him up on his offer/advice.

He will sell you a one piece inner bearing removal/intallation tool for about $90. He is a machinist and makes them; lots of satisfied customers.
