thank you for clarifying that

So looks like I’m going s&s. Still not sure on lifters. I’m thinking 98” if I do a big bore like djl said. Not sure if money will warrant it because the headwork with comp releases will be a little pricey I feel. But at least I have the bottom end mostly figured out. I want to have it pinned now but my local places only weld them. Can anybody that owns there own shop chime in and tell me a price to true and pin? Thank you everyone so far. Lots of good info and more than I thought I’d get. Warm welcome

Johnson Hy-Lift from Larry's Machine & Motorcycle, AKA, WFO Larry for the lifters; several choices and JMHO but the pin oiling rings my bell.

If going with S&S crank, in a 98" motor, consider foregoing the pin/weld option. S&S wheel sets have been tweaked but few and far between; save the money for head work.

thank you for the video. I didn’t mean s&s crank, I meant cam plate and oil pump. Not sure if you thought I meant I was doing an s&s crank. Anyway I do like the pin and weld other than just the weld. I’d like some people that do it to chime in with prices. I want to do it right and once.

My bad, I thought an S&S crank. Darkhorse price list is attached and if you want it done once and right, that's where I would send the crank. The '02 models still ran the Timken bearing so all you need to do is split the cases and send them the crank. You did not mention how many miles on the motor but if say 50K or more, you coulld send the cases in and have the crank addressed as well as refurbish the complete lower unit with new bearings, etc. Just a thought.

close to 60,000 miles. I will definitely get ahold of them and see what there pricing is. I would have to send it in the left side casing because I heard the timken bearing is a pain to get together right. I also planned on doing the other bearings to freshen it up. Thank you!

If it's in the budget, send them the complete lower unit. They can split the cases, T/B/W the crank, check all clearances, replace bearings, etc. re-assemble and send the complete unit back. The last one I did that way was the lower unit for my all bore 107" build for my '02 FLHT. Prices have probable changed since 2014 but Darkhorse refurbished the lower unit, trued, balanced, plugged and welded the crank for about $1200. IIRC, shipping back and out ran about $150. I had to build a suitable container for shipment as well.

So I finally got the bike all together and done. I ended up bringing my parts to hillside cycle. Great people. I had them true and pin my crank, bore to a 98”, refresh my heads while also shaving them, porting and polishing, and bigger valves. 570 s&s ez start cams, lunati lifters, s&s adjustable pushrods, and a dynatek ignition. Also I kept my feuling cam plate and oil pump which has the hydraulic tensioners and outer cam bearings. Im very happy with it and how it performs. Thank you all for the insight because I didn’t know about the plugging/pinning and also about the outer cam bearings being better than the newer cam plates where it is just riding on the material. Thanks again!
