I bet if you heat up the case in that area, you will see the cracks reappear. Yes, I’m quite the pessimist but I’m quite versed on cracking of aluminum.

Any recommendation on what temp to heat it to (or not exceed)? I'll give it a try, couldn't hurt..

To remove the pinion race (just below that bearing) you heat the case half to 275-300f in an oven. But I sincerely doubt you'll ever get it to that temp with the cases assembled without getting the area in question overheated and really damage the case. If you're worried about it, just go over it with a heat gun or a small butane torch. If there's a crack there, the heat will draw oil out of it and you'll see it

I'm sticking with my first thought especially after you cleaned it all up - run it, don't worry about it. There are certainly people on here more versed in metallurgy than me, but doubt that many, if any have seen the insides of more Evo cases than myself... not bragging, just saying.

There is no callout in the service manual to heat the cases and inspect for cracks.
That case is fine.

Theres a spray dye you can use to see if there are any cracks. It's a two part deal, if I remember correctly it's only been 30 years it's a red dye spray then followed by a white and any cracks show right up in dark red. There's gotta be something like that still available. I'd do that before I went to heating them...but they sure look like they're gone in the second picture.

Spot Check from welding supply stores. Red dye and a white powder developer. There is also a special cleaner. Years ago it was trichloroethylene. Don't know what they use now. Spot Check will show any cracks
