Finally tore into my cam chest to see what cam my FXR has in it. The previous owner said he changed it out long ago and can't remember what cam he put in it, and since the bike has S&S Super Stock heads and a Screamin Eagle Mikuni HSR42, I would imagine it's not stock. I'm still in the process of looking for any identifying marks.
Whelp, after doing some reading, it sound that just popping off the cover is a big no-no without releasing pressure off the cam from the pushrods. Popped the cover back on and now looks like I'll be replacing the cam bearing too.

Yup, your gonna have to relieve the pressure off of the lifters by taking the top end apart.. Or you can cut the pushrods and replace with quickies.. Then pull the cover and cam.. As said on the inside end of the cam will be the identifying marks.. post up a pic of both the cam bearing and end of cam shaft.. Just because you took it apart the way you did, does not justify replacing the inner cam bearing.. Let's see what you have first.. pics....
I have no idea if mine was replaced sometime during it's life but need to look. I'm assuming because it has adjustable push rods it was replaced.
Unless it has solid lifters, I'm going to have to find out what cam I have before the push rods need to be adjusted however.
If I can't ID the cam, I'll just put solids in it and be done.
Just cut the push rods . if you have no reason to pull the heads ,don't. You already created more work for your self why keep running down the rabbit hole. Cut push rods get adjustable read study do cam bearing. good luck.
I'm thinking of just replacing the bearing anyway. I'm out of town at the moment and don't know if I have adjustable pushrods, since it's got S&S heads, I'm assuming that the previous owner just reused the stock rods. I'll find out more tonight.
Myself, I would not cut the pushrods.
Take things apart as mentioned and reuse whatever pushrods you have.
If the pushrods are OEM, I am assuming they were doing the job for ya so they are up to the task.
If you have hydraulic lifters along with OEM pushrods and they are working correctly, keep 'em and enjoy not having to adjust the valves.
Of course, it's all your call.
