Sorry for the delay. No parts were mixed up with the lifter, took the intake lifter apart by itself and reassembled. That was it. While installing a water heater and some other things for the in laws yesterday I was thinking the scoring could be from that intake pushrod being too tight and then running it the short time that I did. Now I'm concerned and want to check the others also.

So I ordered the Smith Bros pushrods last Thursday morning and called yesterday morning for a status check. They said March 23-24 they would be sent and I can't wait that long. Ordered a set of S&S quickie adjustables from JP Cycles and they arrive today. I'm going to pull the lifters out and check the exhaust lifter for scoring also and go from there. Larry I'll text you once I pull them.

Ride safe!

Ok update: Got the S&S quickies, installed, and after bleed down each pushrod was able to be spun easily, and yes I did each cylinder separately and waited 30 min for each bleed down. I set the timing per what JBarr stated and funny it's about the same position as the one I marked when I broke it down originally so I feel pretty good there. Anyway the wind was blowing at 50 MPH today and didn't feel like having everything in my garage blowing around so the big start up is tomorrow morning.

Once again thanks for all the help, Larry, Max, Twisted, 98HotRod, and JBarr. I believe everything happens for a reason in this universe, good or bad.

Ride safe!!

Ok, sorry for the long delay had a busy last week. So I just got everything set up and went to start her and she was struggling to turn over, meaning the actual cycling of the engine itself.

So now I'm waiting a bit and I'm gonna double check the pushrods again but I'm wondering if I could have burnt out the starter when I was starting her before. When I pulled the plugs and put her into 4th gear to do TDC she was very tough to spin so now that has me thinking.

Any thoughts? BTW, battery is full charged and load tested so no issues there.

Ride safe!

Now that you have 2 cylinder generating compression, you got more load on the starter..

Since you have an early evo, if it has the bendix system like on shovels, it might need a rebuild.. I don't know jack about them.

Thanks Max, I just tried again with the same result. Pulling the starter to inspect.

Here is the starter broken down. I'm leaning toward a new starter and yes I know most are made in China now. But at 38 yrs old I'm not sure I can save this unless someone here can convince me. Gonna run some quick tests per the manual.

That starter is cherry compared to how I usually see them, plenty of brush left and no serious pitting or armature wear. Blow it out with a little brake clean or air line, lube the end cap bearing and run it.

That thing is clean.

If you want you can take a little emery cloth to the armature where the brushes ride.. Otherwise as TwiZted said.. Looks good..
