I'd go back to the machinist and ask if he thought of that...
The margin on the valve looks a litttle thin too. It may be perfectly fine if its an intake valve. Im not sure what new ones look like or what HD specs allow.

Yes, after looking things over, the margin is right down to the bare minimum. I’ve ordered new intake valves and wasn’t going to say anything until they got here and I saw how it affects the stem protrusion. I’ll let you know how it measures after they get here.

The machine shop did exactly what I asked them to do. Nothing more, nothing less. Bashing the machine shop is pointless and non-productive as they are not to blame.

I'm just learning this stuff as I go. I enjoy learning as much as I can, and doing as much as I can when I'm interested in something. I you want to bash on someone, you can bash on me and tell me how stupid I am.

Don't think you're stupid. You've been asking valid questions.

If the machine shop is a standard automotive one, you likely got a decent job. One specializing in HDs might have mentioned some issues but maybe not.. For 1, absolutely nothing wrong with going for a little more protrusion if using a higher lift cam.. The important thing is to make sure the spring stack is set right..

Have you checked protrusion with the new valves?

I don't have the new valves yet. I'm hoping they arrive tomorrow.

I wasn't trying to bash the machine shop... just an observation. I also appreciate you learning as you go; we all do that, and that's part of why we're all here. I did find it interesting that you said that the margin was right at the minimum spec. That might be the .015 you're seeing at the top of the stem for 'installed height'. Please measure very carefully; new valves MAY NOT correct the issue, and you still may be too high. Then you might have a seat dimension issue... I hope not! I'm sending positive karma!

The new intake valves showed up today. They fixed the issue. All valve stem protrusions on all valves are well within specs. I remeasured everything about these heads again to make sure and everything is within specs. I should be good to go. Thanks for the helpful comments and the good karma soarguy.
