You can swap out the valve springs to beehives with the heads still on. You just need the correct valve spring tool and pressurize the cylinder so that valves don't drop. I got mine from Nub Tools. Goodson also carries the Nub compressor.
When I do cams then I always do lifters.. But depending on mileage.. As for precision by S&S they are holding up fine to spring pressures of 170/400 where the Woods Alpha lifters failed...
Thanks all for sharing your experience. I swapped my stock tappets with 30k on them for S&S Precision lifters with the Quickie installation kit (rods and tubes).
Aside from some self-imposed drama due to carelessness, the job was easy.
The lifters I took out were still good- so sign of impending doom. But I can say that the new ones are noticeably quieter- no more tap-tap-tap.
So now I have piece of mind- worth its weight in gold.
