Hi All, Going to replace trans oil and brake fluid. I'm seeing all different weights and brands recommended. What's the correct oils for (trans and brake) for a 90 sportster 1200. Thanks V
for the trans, Formula+ is what the factory now recommends, I however dont like it. there are several aftermarket brands that offer the fluid, its called sport trans oil(or lube) Belray's product is good and Spectro's STL is great.
Brake fluid is
DOT 5 silicone,,,,,,,,,********^^^^^^important********** ****Dot 5 silicone is NOT the same asDOT 5.1*******************
engine oil, good quality motorcycle oil at 20w50
m
Bel Ray 85W-40 good? I was thinking....not sure what brake fluid is in there now(just bought the bike)...how can I tell so I dont contaminate anything and wind up with a gel in my brake lines. V
1. As above, you cannot go wrong with the fluids recommended in the owner's manual.
2. The primary & transmission are common to each other and use the same fluids.
3. The type of brake fluid should be labeled on your front & rear master cylinders, I think the 1990 Sportsters used DOT 5.
4 If you are going to work on your Sportster, a good investment is a H-D Service manual.
NOTE:
The above information, while credible, is worth what you paid for it and should not be considered gospel.
Do due diligence, research and have a H-D Field Service Manual before working on your bike.
You will probably have many opinions and suggestions presented; make sure you research the person providing the helpful information as there are some who provide good information that is useful and some who speak out of other orifices with gibberish. You will figure out this quickly.
DOT 5 - page 142 of the owners manual. You might want to read it.
On a sportster the primary fluid and trans fluid are the same. They are not independent like the big twins are. See chart on page 156.
