Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
I just finished installing my V-Twin 1200 jugs and pistons. It runs great with a notable power increase so I'm very happy with that. The only thing thats bugging me is it's hard to start now despite it being on the trickle charger the whole time it was down for the work. It acts like the battery is low of the starter is weak, doesn't like to turn over. The pistons are dished so the compression should be the same or similar to what it was before. Anyone else experience this?
What is the battery reading with engine off, charger not plugged in? 12.8v or higher? 12.6v says to recharge.
Say you run a voltmeter on the battery and watch the readings thru this process:
1. Static or no running says 12.8v or better.
2. Key on shows it didn't drop from 12.8v.
3. Start bike shows a drop to 11.1V.
4. Begins to idle and shows 14.4v.
5. Idles but shows 12.8v steady. This says stator is burnt out.
6.. Idles but shows 15v or higher. This says volt reg is burnt out.
Starter motor is the load test and returns to 12.8v shows it has reserve so this says battery is good.
Thats not unreasonable. Just odd because it was fine before I took it down (about a month ago) and it's been on the tender the whole time.
sometimes its the simple stuff but it could be it though just coincedence with the top end upgrade Id say if the battery is 5 years old or more it may be time to have it checked tested etc.

Yea I've only had it for a ~year but figure it has to be on its second battery at least and that would put it >= 5 years old.

Say you run a voltmeter on the battery and watch the readings thru this process:
1. Static or ignition off says 12.8v or better.
2. Key on shows it didn't drop less than 12.4v.
3. Start bike shows a greater than 9.5V.
4. Begins to idle and shows greater than 13.1.
5. Idles but shows less than 13.1v steady. This says stator or regulator is burnt out.
6.. Idles but shows 15v or higher. This says volt reg is burnt issue.
