Hello people.I'm looking for some info on a cam for my RKS.
Previous with camming my 22 Fat Bob wasn't great.
That bike had an S&S 475 with cam plate and oil pump, lifter, cuffs, bearing and so on.
The bike was tuned with Don Performance On Road tuning. This type of tuning according to Kevin Baxter who a lot of you might know can be as good or better than dyno tuning.
The bike wasn't nice coming off idle leaving out the clutch. It was super soft which could lead to a dodgy situation going up a hill or slow maneuvers for example.
The bike also wanted to carry a gear lower than stock which I didn't like too much. You might say it wanted to rev.
It did sound crazy but I preferred the stock or stage 1 smoothness overall.
I'm now at the point of deciding to cam my new RKS.
I feel like the 447 SE offering will keel the stock smoothness but I'm not sure about if I will get some lope which I would like,at least a little.
The exhaust is a D&D Billet Cat with big bore baffle.
The other cams I'm looking at are 22XE,48OMT and maybe a few others.
My concern going to the aftermarket, which are all higher lift than the 447(which has a 462 Ex lift iirc) will be that i end up unhappy again because I loose the smoothness of my stage 1.I don't want this.
So to summarise.....will the 447 give me some lope?If yes maybe I'll go that route.
Will the 480mt or 22xe take away my smooth linear AT ANY REV(but especially off idle and low down)throttle feel?
I rarely get over 4k revs.I do sometimes though but 1k-3k revs is usually where I am most of the time. But stock like smoothness is more important.
Thanks and have a great day people.
I traveled over 5 hours and spent good money to get my bike dyno tuned. The difference in throttle control off idle is night and day when compared to stock. I got more power for sure, but the biggest improvement is the rideability. In addition to the added torque and responsiveness 'down low', I find I don't have to shift as often on winding roads in the hills. Based on my experience, I wouldn't blame your bike's function on the cam....
Coming from a guy who has tried most of the popular cams, I liked the S&S 465 over all of them. Like you, I liked the power delivery of the sock over all of the popular cams with the exception being the 465.
Big bore baffle probably has more to do with your symptoms than the 475 cam
Here's a video of a guy that didn't like the 475 for similar reasons to myself.Different pipe that I had on my Fat Bob but still a 114 with 475.
There's also room for discussion on this where some guys just dont care about a lumpy bike after a cam coming off idle as it doesnt last for too long.Even this marvel kid guy speaks about the 465 Fueling being more 'smooth' than the 475.Is this what he means?

I'm a bit wary of the S&S 465.Maybe because it's S&S after having the 475.I understand i probably shouldn't be but id rather go a different route I think.
Sorry I misread your post...The 475 has a pretty late exhaust valve closing point, making it extra picky with the pipe. The 465 is nothing like that and should work fine, along with the others you mentioned, as long as it's tuned well

A very well known company in the US told me tge issue with the 475 is the amount of overlap it has.The 480 mt is calling me.The low and mid range looks like it would be glorious on the road.
