Default Starter Jackshaft

I have a starter jackshaft from a 1989 electraglide
i noticed the coupler that slided onto the starter shaft and the end of jackshaft does not have an offeset, the snap clip inside is same distance from either end (in centre)
also when assembling where does the spring go?
mine doesnt seem to sit right

Do you have #11 in the diagram installed backwards?

Assembkes as per the HD repair manual
but it sticks out
Isn't the pinion gear supposed to be in the collet and clear of the clutch sprocket?

I believe the spring is possibly on the wrong side of coupling #8. Drawing is wrong.

The pinion gear in the pic is way out of position.

Keep in mind, the 1989 Jackshaft assembly is not the same as `90 or later, it is a one year only assembly.
