Used idle cable adjustment to adjust engine idle
Is it OK to adjust the idle by adjusting the idle cable? I learned on these forums that the idle cable is really supposed to just be a safety cable in case the throttle cable doesn't return. But I changed my grips and then my idle was too low and the engine was stalling at stops. I found that tightening the idle cable solved the problem. So I'm thinking the cable must have gotten out of adjustment when I changed the grips. Everything seems OK now - should I check anything else such as the idle adjustment at the carb?
Also, what should the RPMs be at idle? I've got it at 1000 which seems pretty good.

Tightening the idle cable would lower the idle. You must have tightened the throttle cable ands that is dangerous. Replacing the grips should have no affect on the idle speed. Take it to a shop and have them check it out. What else is done to the bike??

yeah I should have said I loosened the idle cable. I don't know why it changed after changing the grips but it was stalling. Loosening the idle fixed it at first, but then I started having the problem again. I had my local H-D dealer look it over and they fixed ot for free - they spent about 45 minutes on it. I tipped the mechanic. I also must have had the grip on too tight instead of leaving it 1/8 inch from off the bar end as I meant to. He fixed that too. I like to try and do it myself but sometimes they just do it better.

It's EFI (07 Ultra). I knew you don't normally adjust the idle and throttle cables but wasn't sure it I had changed them some when I changed the grips. The shop just checked them out and maybe readjusted them some again, plus lubed them and pulled the throttle grip out 1/8 inch like I thought I had.
