Default timing on a points system and carb

i have a 80 wide glide. i have been working on this for a couple weeks now. my father gave it to me. all i know is that it ran 5 years ago somewhat. it has been setting for a while. the first thing i did was drained the gas and put fresh gas in it. i also drained the bowl. i put new points and condenser. and it fired up. it runs but has a slow throttle if i go from idle to full throttle it just pops and stays around the same idle. if i go slow the rpms climb like they should. also at full throttle it seems to be lacking fuel. the motor feels like it can rev higher than it is. i did play a little bit with the timing and it starts a lot easier now any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you get it running you can check the timing with a light. Take the timing plug on the left side of the engine out and attach the light to the front plug wire and battery. Should light with the mark in the hole. Tweek it as needed. Doesn't sound like a timing problem, sounds more like fuel. What type of carb? If it sat for 5 years you may want to remove and soak it in some carb cleaner and replace seals and all. You may have a jet or something that's got some varnish on it cause the delay in acceleration. Most carbs are fairly easy to rebuild. Good luck and congrats on the bike.

I thinjk the points are near closed. and I'm sticken to it. But than again I could be wrong. one thing I like to do when quickly looking for a performance problem that includes low speed weaknes is spray carb cleaner at the air filter and see if the engine picks up if it does it has a chinese tune = WAYLEAN . Actually at idle the engine speed should stay just about uneffected by the spert of carb cleaner, note CARB CLEANEr, not brake cleaner not throttle body cleaner and also if the engine slows down it is way rich. Don over and out>>>>>
