Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
the feed gears shattered, sheared the key, scored the inside of the pump wall very badly and cracked the pump driveshaft. I plan on installing a new pump and shaft. in order to gain access to the oil pump drive gear and remove it from the shaft is it necessary to remove the pinion gear? if it needs to be removed can it be done without first removing the cam gear? should i/can i check the oil tank for debris? any advice or information would be greatly appreciated and much needed. i do have the service manual but it doesn't tell me anything specific about accessing the oil pump drive gear in the gear case.
Hey did you have to take the oil pinion gear off to fix your pump? If so did you have to strip the whole thing? My oil pump pinion gear and oil pump drive gear shattered and and I'm contemplating how to get them out without pulling the rocker covers, rocker arms, push rods and lifters to get the cam out of the way and get the pinion gear off.
Please let me know if your problem entailed any of the things mentioned above.
i have just changed the shaft and pump on my 97 road king.
i did not remove the engine
i undid the 2 bolts conecting to gearbox
undid the front mount
undid the4 primary bolts
and let of the primary chain adjuster.
this gave me enough room by twisting the motor round so shaft cleared the box
installed new shaft without removing cam using 90 degree circlip pliers
you then have to build pump up on new shaft
remember to put the 2 insde bolts in pump before fitting as you do not have enough room to fit them after.
hope this helps someone.
happy riding
