Default Sleeve size?

I've been tinkerin' for a while but, honestly, I've never quite steeped outside of certain restrictions known to me, at least. Do I have to use Iron or other related material as a sleeve or can I pull the sleeve out & run a piston through the alloy cylinder wall. Or, just how thin; for instance, can I open the airvent baffling of a cylinder's exterior wall revealing the Iron sleeve & if so how thick does that sleeve need to be? I understand that in most situations I would be restricted by Head size but on a motor like a Flathead/ 2stroke which has no working parts in it...Can I conceivably do this?
My mind is working a little fast so if this is just stupid, I'm cool, just say so.
