leaking primary supprise
hope you can help me here. I have a 58 panhead and has had a big leak from the small hole in the bottom of the primary. i thought a little bit of a leak is normal but my bike has been sitting for about 2 months without being started and there is a stain on the concrete of about 2 feet round. I finally decided to remove the primary cover and see what i can find. once removed i was shocked to find that the chain had been replaced by a belt. I was under the impression that if you have a belt drive there is no need to lubricate inside the primary cover. I know there is a drip mechanism and im hoping it just comes from that but i cant tell. is there anywhere behind the clutch it could be coming from? if it is the dripper how can i turn it off. I think there might be a screw on the other side of the motor but not sure if i screw it all the way in if i am doing damage to another part of the engine. Dont want to stop lubrication to places that should be.
i know many of you HD guys have converted your panheads to belt drive so if you can advise me of what needs to be done i would be most grateful
If this forum doesnt know, no one will
thanks in advance
First off on my shovel I have isolated the primary making it independent of the engine oiling system..
You do have a chain oiler that is adjustable..could leak..Inner primary seal and bearing could leak..Tranny seal and bearing could leak..
Another thing to look in to is sumping..I have a 46 Indian, and a 49 Flathead that will sometimes sump, leaking oil all over the floor and making it hard to start..
Wish you luck and pictures of old scoots are always nice..
