New to Harleys.
Runs good but pulled the plugs while winterizing her for the big sleep and both plugs are equally black and sooty.?
Apparently the p.o. owned it for 8 years and bike was serviced by a " local go to bud " .?
My question is ... do big dispacement air cooled engines present this as normal or is a freshening up in the cards.?
Previouse bike ., 88 Gold Wing with over twice the miles and running excellent , just to complicated and nasty to work on.
With 70K mi. a better way is to have a compression check accommplished. Then You know more about the rings and valves. If it is holding good compression, focus on carburator, clean or rebuild and adjust. At present you don't know jet size. Although if it runs out good then carb and valve adjustment is probably good.
Be carefull not (NOT) get the mixture too lean. Different from your GW these engines like to be on the rich side.
How does the exhaust pipes look at the outlets? Black dry sootiness is probably OK , but heavy thick and wet may be way too much fuel.
One other check that may be usefull is have someone follow and check for smoke out of the exhaust. Does it smoke at idle, during accelleration, or decelleration?
If all that seems OK , maybe just change plugs and wires, add some fuel additive and ride
