'97 EVO EFI w/130,000 miles......engine fails to start....click when depressing START button.
I've been able to rock bike in gear in the past and engine will start. Someone suggest a binding jack shaft may be the culprit. Very random problem but now no success.
How loud is the click, faint or loud? Put your hand on the starter and push the start button, do you feel the solenoid move?
A nice healthy clack from the starter means the solenoid is operating, but the electrical contacts in the solenoid are not making contact to send juice to the starter motor.
You can buy a solenoid rebuild kit from the dealer, (at HD inspired prices), or you can go to a starter shop and get the same exact parts for small change.
If you hear a very faint click, and can feel nothing when your hand is on the starter, it is probably a bad starter relay.
Starter relays are cheap, even from the dealer.

connect another battery via jumber leads so that you rule out a dead battery. otherwise its the relay, solinoid or copper contact ring ring in the solinoid.
