Id say go with the S&S crank and be done with it. Easy to spend someone else's $$$.

Darkhorse could answer all your questions. The tapered rods were found in the 96" motor and are junk.

Uh huh! They did change the design in 2011 though.

Better in that you dont have a bushing that can turn on you. Cast flywheels are not as good as they once were but thousands out there with no issue.

So to save money and have a better rod could I have my 88 rods pressed on a 96 crank?? And then have it welded

I have read a lot of threads about crank-work and practically no one seems to say the rods need replacing for a 107" build. I have a 2012 and my crank/flywheels should be coming back from Darkhorse soon with the stock rods. Not sure how different the 2006 rods are compared with the 2012s.

I have had it done many times and have another in the works right now, check out silvermooncycle on the net. Great work at a great price.

Yes, don't know if it will save any money but you could have the '06 rods installed on a 96 crank but the SE 4.375" crank assembly runs about $1100, plus shipping, from an online discount dealer. Send it to R/R for balancing and welding if you want it welded. The SE cranks are fitted with a tighter interfence fit than the stockers and welding for a street build may not be necessary; a judgement call. JMHO.
