Interesting. I have always been a fan of the cross over. Harley seems to go for form over function a fair amount of the time.
True, but Harley is far from being alone. here are some obvious examples from other manufacturers in other market segments:
- The Mustang, Camaro, and Challenger cars
- Almost any ladies' designer dress
- Ever looked at a Ducati 996 from above the bike? Don't tell me it's a pure coincidence that it has the EXACT hourglass shape of a perfect female body
- Any Victorian styled modern house
This is what we appear to WANT in the products we buy.
So if I could somehow install touring mufflers on my softail I could make more power than with "softail" specific mufflers, just because they're bigger?

It's a THEORY, not necessarily proven, to my knowledge. But, it has credibility in terms of logic. For equal final exhaust volume of noise, it seems logical that a larger exhaust system (more total exhaust cubic volume) could create less back pressure for the engine to overcome.
They key is "less total back pressure", NOT a larger exhaust that "corks" the engine no more or no less.
The softail models have balancer shafts, which are a significant parasitic load and will inevitably affect power and torque, wherever it is measured. The Rushmore touring engines have water-cooled heads and they enable the factory to raise CR and use better cam profiles, compared with the other models, which along with their 2-1-2 exhaust deliver improved performance. The Dyna models are currently the datum by which we can judge the other two.
I don't believe that touring mufflers will benefit a softail, but an aftermarket 2-into-1 will, by boosting low/mid range torque.
It is no concidence that when Buell adapted the Sportster engines and used a 2-into-1 with equal length pipes, they were able to significantly increase CR and use wilder cam profiles to greatly increase performance. The current touring exhaust system is an adaptation of that principle, to boost torque, which the softails and dynas do not currently use.
