I was wondering if anyone has heard about cyl.head valve guides breaking.my 2014 street glide special started smoking on cold starts. This bike has 1142 miles on it..
Took to dealership and was told damage to head ,valve guide and lifter bore..they tell me there gonna replace cyl head...I realy have a prob with this repair due to the low mikage and only 1 month old.i was basicly told to go pound sand.and just wondered what you all thought about my situation.all I asked for was to replace engine and was totally dissapointed in hd for this.bought 6 brand new bikes from hd and this is what I get for my latest 23 thousand dollars. ANY THOUGHTS?
Are you saying that you think the whole engine should have been replaced? The engine didn't blow up so why would they replace the whole thing?
They found the problem and are fixing it.
Believe me I'm not a Harley defender, in fact quite the opposite ( bad experiences with the "quality" of HD's ), but in this case I don't see your point.
Lifter bore? That isn't in the head, or jug for that matter. That would seem to be an engine replace to me. Or else it isn't the lifter bore I have in my mind.
first post and you are hoping someone will chime in and say that they had the same thing and got a new engine. the bike should be fine with the repairs they are making. you have 2 years on the factory warranty...buy extended coverage right before it expires if you are still worried.
broken valve guide, wich inturn dropped valve into cylinder.....now ya think i need engine...yea first post and you act like its some kinda crime to ask for engine when this happens to your bike if it werent a dinasor.you would ask for the same thing.
Yea they can fix it and make it run right for a while, but,,,,,, if there's lifter bore damage like bad wear or scoring, and piston damage from dropped valve, impacts to rod and crank bearings, and all that shrapnel circulated through the engine.
All this at 1k miles?
I'm with you, wouldn't expect anything less than a fresh new engine, not one with freakin metal ran all through it.
But with that kind of failure, should of did alot more than just smoke on start up, kinda don't add up.
You probably have a better shot at getting them to give you an extended warranty as opposed to replacing the entire engine. I understand your frustration though. I went through something similar with another brand 6 years ago.
That can be easily repaired to give great service for litteraly years, and I cannot make myself think that the entire powerplant is fubared or should be scrapped, because of that occuring.
We seen MUCH worse than that over the years on other engines, that are still in service.
