Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
About the stupidest thing I ever did (on a routine basis) when I was running the local creeks, rivers and trails on those Honda singles, was to cut a set of oversize rings down so I could cram them into a stock bore. Believe-it-or-not....it would work. I don't know for how long, because we'd always have to rebuild one of those engines annually anyway. Running across creeks, floating rivers and digging-up sand across the sand-bars just was not that good for any engine.
The proper piston/wall clearence maintains ring stability allowing them to perform as intended, but .020" skirt clearence would set the stage for a skirt to become fractured, odd wear in the bore, and as I already mentioned oil consumption/smoke.
