Default breather gear missing tooth

Bike was making an odd noise and whining, took cam nosecone off and found plastic breather gear was missing 1 tooth. My question is do i just replace? I don't see anything else wrong, cam chest clean. 1992 dyna 50k 5000 on new top end. Am i looking for something else that may have caused this? Bore is a little scratched up but i spun gear easily.

Depending on how much it is scratched, you may have to have it bored for an over-sized gear...if it doesn't seal properly it will puke oil out the breather constantly. I would do everything possible to find the missing tooth.

This is very common, the scratches in the bore are usually just from normal wear and tear, the breather is sacrificial.

I have seen them lose 3 teeth and just digest them with no ill effects. On the rare occasions you find them they are usually in the bottom of the cam chest but it is best to try to locate it by flushing the oil lines and galleries and inspecting the oil pump but you may never find it.

I would go with a S&S reed breather, never have that problem again

Do the plastic gears just break down and get brittle with age? Hope this is the cause of my noise and not a symptom of something else.

S&S states the reed breathers are for 93 up only...ie a "top breather". Lots of people have had problems installing the reed valve on a "bottom breather" motor. Harley changed from bottom to top breathing mid year in 92...so you need to check and see what your motor is before going that route.

It is a bottom breather, thanks I was considering this too.
