Not another cam thread😃
you cheated -- .025 off the heads and .030 head gaskets gives the motor .8 more compression at a reduced .035 head to deck than stock he is not doing that, its not apples is apples with out the changes you made the EV 13 is a dud in cam choices BUT the OP does not want seat of the pants performance so he is good with that cam choice
My engine runs remarkably smooth and this was commented on by a few people that rode my bike afterwards, who had nothing to do with the build.
I have read that head volume was something HD was sloppy with and there is more variation than there should be. Maybe when I had my heads milled, their volumes were measured and they are now more equal.
Regarding the adapter, it was because my bike is a 95 and it was a year that HD was changing the connector/number of pins. The actual module is the same and as luck would have it, the module I bought was not the right connector. The company that makes the module I bought makes an adapter, so that is what I went with.
I am not sure what to make about your cheating remark but will say what my thought process was. I wanted a bump in cranking pressure as Evo's respond very well to higher pressure. Also, depending on the cam selected, you lose some cranking pressure, so milling the heads gets some of that back. I went with the thinner gaskets so that if something unexpected happened, I would have the option of going with a normal thickness gasket if I needed to reduce the pressure some. I was also thinking in long term, if I would want to go with different Pistons in the future, it would give me some leeway to play with. Again, really not 100% necessary but just seemed like a cost efficient way to get a little more out of the cam.
As it turned out, there was some very minor cylinder scarring once things were opened up, so a fresh set of rings and minor honing and it was fine.
The cases were cleaned up where the jugs sit to ensure a good seal due to the age of the engine even though I really didn't have any leaks or weeping.
I am probably making smaller numbers than most guys on this forum but the way in which the power it is making is delivered and the unusual smoothness makes for a bike that is fun to ride all day without wearing out my aching arthritis body. It's comfortable around town, back roads, sweeping curves, and yes, interstates.
My dad has a 2008 Road King. I am not sure what all it has besides Rinehart's but on our last ride together he started to get on it a bit to pull away from me and I surprised him by not only keeping up but overtaking him. Granted, we were not going fast, but it was more of a roll on acceleration thing. He's 70 years old but I have more aching bones, arthritis, and other health issues than he has.
Sorry about going off on a tangent, but my point is you don't need to have the biggest numbers to have a bike that is responsive and fun to ride. You also don't have to empty out your bank account.
i was busting you, have installed both in customers bikes, what you did with the 13 is to increase the static compression with the head plaining and the thin gaskets making it very stout in the low revs - it must get good fuel mileage as well crusing at just a small crack open on the throttle crusing the hwy -
Thanks, that's very helpful information, I'm not looking for performance. I'm not going to be winning any races anyway. I just want to get rid of this horrible EPA compliant N cam that the factory put in. Personally I'm leaning more toward the Ev13 or EV23 or Crane Fireball 300 or 310.

I know. I enjoy talking about my engine and explaining it since it is not the typical high horsepower high rpm build that many people brag about. I plan on riding this bike until the day I die permanently, I enjoy it so much. If something were to happen to it where it is completely destroyed, I am not sure how I would proceed.
how about build another one the same way
Hell yeah! For super duper cheap, I'll give it a shot.
PM'd! Thanks allot, I guess thats one way to shut me up and stop me from beating this dead horse
