Default Road King with 73,000 miles

I've been searching for a while for an Evo Road king and found one this week. It is a 1997, has 73,000 miles and the owner is asking $5,000 for it. I think that's a fair price, no? What's your thought?

It's funny but in Az 5k seems to be the rock bottom price for any big twin HD that has not been down, regardless of mileage, and, to some extent, condition. For that reason I think it's fair, but if it sits for a while and you have cash may be worth taking a shot for lower, worst he can say is no right?

Original engine internals? Receipts? Conditon of the rest of the bike? Tires? I would ask all these questions before I handed over $5,000--but I wouldn't necessarily pass on it. My 98 had over 70k when I bought it, but it came with a 2" stack of receipts, a manual, and a whole lot of "right" mods/upgrades. I paid more than 5k for it....

I had to pay $7k for my '96 Roadking here in NZ and it had nearly 100k miles on it but I wanted an EVO KING. End of last year we did lifters, pistons, heads and cam etc. we left the bottom end. It was still on original bore but had an EV27 cam. So I am assuming it has been looked after. So $5k sounds good to me.

I paid $4,000 for my 1996 Ultra Classic, Aug. 2013, I have spent aprox. $1,500 fixing little problems, I have rode it over 10,000 miles.

You wouldn't beat that price here in Pittsburgh Pa. If it runs/shifts good and doesn't leak I'd buy it.

Do a compression test, the figures need to be over 100 and within 5% of each other.

Kees's King gave 130 and 160, it was rooted when we pulled the top end off.

A mate went to look at a Shovel last week, it was 80 and 90, he walked away.

Some history as to when it was last apart would help but with no history and if the owner refuses a compression test it would be a risk and I would offer him 4K or walk away.

No history but even compressions and it may well be good to go at 5K...Road Kings fetch top dollar in NZ, even though I constantly refer to them as "Wheelbarrows" they are well suited to NZ roads.

Bought mine in 2004 when prices where up, wouldn't take $20,000 for it now comparing it to a late model bike.

May have to put some coin into the bike to make it your own but $5000 is livable, that is interest when buying a new bike.
