Pull the air filter and check you pump operstion to make sure it's pump. That pump could also cause a hard start condition.
Hmm... good thought, didn't even think to check that. The carb is fresh and clean... It was rebuilt earlier this year when I rebuilt the motor, and I took it apart a few thousand miles ago to make a jet change. The accelerator pump has never been apart though. I will go get my FSM and see what it all looks like in there before I tear it off.

Replace ignition sensor in the nose cone.

You might check for goo coming out of it first.

You can check the VOE's by unplugging it while the engine is running, should change RPM's.

Ignition sensor in nosecone is brand new as well; last one melted from the heat of a busted cam bearing. Im really leaning towards the accel. Pump or plug wires now.

Cool

OK, now check timing.

Make sure accelerator nozzle is pointed straight into the carb.

I don't think the accelerator pump would cause the engine to die when coming down from high revs. But! Who knows on these things.

Timing may have slipped since install of new sensor.

Bike was timed with a timing light; there is a possibility the adjustment screws came loose though. I will check that today.

It just makes sense that it's in the idle circuit because that is when the problems seem to happen, but I'm not ready to rule out the VOES and old *** plug wires just yet. Accel pump worked fine last time I checked it but old things break.

I'd start by replacing the wires. It may or may not fix it, but it's cheap and at 20 years old, I'd figure I needed 'em anyway.

Tman, you say when you hold the rpm a 3k for a while, and then close or chop the throttle, it'll die.

To rule out the VOES, ground the VOES wire and see if it'll repeat, or even take it for a short ride and see if the symptoms repeat, try not to let it ping on acceleration.

I tested the voes and it fails intermittently which might explain everything. Even if it aint the whole problem its still broken.

checking the voes needs an OHM meter to see if its consistant in its operation --
