Yup! There's a flying replica of a similar
plane just a few miles away from here - and a Sopwith Camel is under construction.

The truth is stranger than......

Lucky you, it might be worth a trip from Oklahoma to see a flying Sopwith Camel. I recently flew in a Ford Tri-motor. The best part was the cockpit, I don't think it was any higher tech than the Sopwith. Three pumps of the throttle and the engine starts up.

Beary, Mrs B and I visited Oshkosh in 2003 and IIRC there was a Tri-motor flying that day. We have the UK equivalent close by at Shuttleworth, so browse their website for some tasty old aircraft, most in flying condition and many of them authentic originals. Even some of the buildings are historic and have been moved from other locations, to add to the olde worlde charm of the place. Like Oshkosh there is stacks of fascinating stuff on static display.

Yes, it'd be nice if they did a pressurised system a bit like an **** irrigation unit all the starlets go to have their enemas on, where you can see all the old crap come out until it was all nice and clean, with a wash cycle in the middle.

Surely you could run one off a DIY 'filter to oil cooler' sandwich? An oil change kit that is, not an enema kit.

I did a Google to see if I could come up with a picture of a good **** irrigation device. Boy, was that a mistake. It came up with pictures of **** irritation instead.

I now consider myself educated and very, very grateful.

How would it work ... you'd have to pump round cleaner/new oil at the same pressure it was coming out.

Yes, it's all a little **** and bikes run for 100,00s of miles without it but given actually costs, and how much other money is thrown away on frivolities, it's a wonder we don't use the like.

But why with all the developments are we still changing out at 3,000 miles etc? Surely it should be a lot more by now. Some modern autos are up to much higher mileages.

I still believe in a 3000 mile oil change for anything with a carburetor. When you choke or enrich(depending on what brand of carb you have)the excess gas finds its way to the oil...no matter how high tech your oil is, it cannot do it's job contaminated by gasoline. Modern fuel injection is the main reason new cars get more miles between rebuilds.

There is a lot more to running longer mileages on a new engine, compared to older ones. The materials used, running clearances, filter size, etc. There is little point trying to extend the mileage on an older engine, that was originally built for short oil change intervals. There is also no point in using synthetic oils in an old Evo IMHO.

I have corresponded with S&S on my 107" engine, with a view to riding it on an extended trip in excess of it's oil service interval and they say it is fine. I would be happy to do that on a long trip, with relatively little traffic work, but resume normal intervals at all other times. While being an 'Evo' it is also a new engine and synthetic oil is recommended.

In 1985-1986, when I got out of the USAF I worked on radial engines at an fixed base operation. The Wright and Pratt and Whitney radials all used a dry sump design, just like HD. The small amount of dirty oil in the crank case is really inconsequential for a bike that is properly maintained.

When I was single my only ride was a motorcycle. I took some long road trips. I changed the oil on the road a few times. I just had to figure it out. If I knew that I would need a change on the road I would pack a filter and buy oil on the trip. It always worked out.

Now take a pressure washer to it, then some brake cleaner. THEN it will be MOSTLY clean for the oil change.
