I was at my local indy's shop and he had a evo out of a late 90's softail sitting on the bench. The owner just upgraded to an S&S motor. Bought the motor in running condition CHEAP. I have been somewhat hesitant to get too far into the motors on my bikes, but now I'll be able to get some hands on experience rebuilding this one, should build my confidence a great deal. Also could be the start of a project.
Congrats! A lot of guys like the 89" stroker kit with a custom cam. I'm certainly not an engine guy but whatever you do make sure you start and finish it here.
Tom
And don't forget to log lots of pics with updates..... always interested in a new build... thanx. Good luck....

I think I'll keep it an 80 inch motor, but it will be all brand new with some goodies when I am done with it. I can't wait. I have the fsm for both my evo's so I should have all the instruction I need. I will be posting for advice and tips here though. I don't post much, but I'm here every day.
I haven't really thought about it. I just kind of lucked into the motor. As I start wrenching and see what it needs I'll have a better picture of what I will need to spend. I'm not a big HP guy. A EVO with a good cam, intake and exhaust (and maybe a little headwork) are good enough for me. I don't ride like my hair is on fire anymore!!

My advice is stop before the head work.
It doesn't add enough to be cost effective IMO.
Everything else I agree with.
