Can anyone point me to a MMI to carb conversion thread that has the info for the wiring changes? I've searched here and google and can't find one. I am planning on converting my '98 ultra to carb (finally)
There's a number of them that appear on Google. Don't have them handy at the moment, but a few even go into the details of removing the fuel pump, changing out the ECM with another electronic ignition (because and ignition and Fuel are both tied to the MM ECM bikes), etc.
If I have some time later I'll dig for ya. I've converted to a 42mm Mikuni once on a MM bike. Not that big of a deal but also not just a Throttle Body / Carb swap either...
Here's a few to get you started, but there are a TON of these kinda things out there on various forums. Problem has been around for a long time with a lotta guys making the change to carbs...
My ECM has issues. I just need to find out how to modify the wiring harness. I emailed Dan Thayer (I read on another thread that he makes wiring harnesses). Seems like the PO of my bike was a "tinkerer". I had my local indy hook it up to his analyzer and there was missing info. I think it would be easier just to switch to a carb. I have all of the parts to convert the tank and petcock and a manifold and carb are no big deal, but I have no experience with the electronics. I just can't seem to get this bike to idle correctly (cold). I plan on adding some HP and figure get this done now.
We also have threads about sorting out problems with MMI! You can buy a replacement tunable EFI module from S&S and the MoCo.
Those are a little pricy for me a carb is a little easier (kid starting college this year), plus I like to keep things simple. Mrs Flhchaz is hinting to us getting rid of the evo ultra and getting a brand new one in the next few years. I am resisting and the better I can make this bike run, the better chance I will not have to drop the 25k!
