Default Transmission jerking ?

1998 RoadKing 5 speed FLHPI 40,000 miles
very hard to explain and it does not do it all the time ----When taking off from a stop as you let the clutch out and you are starting to move forward its like the transmission slips or rotates 1/2 a turn then grabs and goes and everything is fine its not clutch slipping its mechanical , i checked the rear belt thinking a couple teeth missing its fine but thats what it feels like . I've changed fluids and adjusted clutch but cant figure this one out

Thanks for any help

Dave

Default Got a manual.....

I've heard the front compensator gear could cause that. You might want to post in the Tech N mechanical forum under Primary/Transmission forum...

It's hard for me to imagine anything other than the clutch that would do that. If the compensator was jumping 180 degrees you would have major issues. I would suspect warped clutch plates..maybe..

I wonder if your clutch cable is hanging sometimes near full release. Lube it.

If it is the original clutch, you may want to pull the clutch disks and check the spring plate in the middle of the stack. They do come apart and cause all kinds of issues. I put in a new clutch pak with extra disk that eliminates the spring plate, it's much better.

May be a bent shift fork, and the gear dogs not fully engaging, and jumping to the next before fully engaged.

That was my first thought, I had to make sure it wasnt Spanners..

I'd be inclined to think the compensator could do it, though I'd expect it to be all the time.. Otherwise, possibly a broken tooth on the gear.. Odd for sure..

Broken tooth on the gear or splines in the final drive sprocket are bad would be my pick from what you have said....I would pull the primary off and check it over.
