Default 1996 FXD Odometer Issue

So finally got my new to me 96 FXD out the other day. Wanted to toggle to the trip meter and reset it when I filled it up. Hit the button to toggle to the next screen on the odometer and I get a blank screen. Held the button in hopes of maybe getting something. Nope. Instead, it reset what I thought was the total mileage of the bike to 0, and if I press the button it toggles back and forth between a blank screen, and my newly reset odometer. Rode the bike last night and the speedo and odometer function just fine. Anyone have an insight or ever experience this before?

Sounds like your screen is broken. I can guarantee that you didn't reset the ODO, you reset the trip meter. From the ODO, you hold the button and it will flip to the trip meter and reset it.

That's kind of what I figured. So now do I have any way of knowing the actual total mileage on the bike? The reading that was on the odometer when I bought it matched up with what was on the title so the number seemed legitimate. All I really wanted to get out of this was a functioning trip meter anyways, but I might as well fix it and be done.

Unless you can some how get the ODO to re-appear, probably not. You'll probably have to replace the screen. Pull it off and make sure all the connections are tight.

Wire harness looks all good. Plug is in and tight. Guess I will be shopping for a new speedo.

I'd think if it was a screen problem, you'd have the same blank screen in trip mode. It'll either work or not work in every mode. I'd suspect the swich and how it activates the different functions, but it's a total swag since I've never cracked one of these open before.

These can be repaired, try an automotive instrument repairer, I had one done in NZ for a Superglide and it cost 80 bucks.
